Memorial

The Northern Territory Police Museum and Historical Society is committed to the remembrance of all Northern Territory police officers who have died whilst serving the community of the Northern Territory.

​

This page is also dedicated to the memory of dearly departed members of the Northern Territory Police Force. 

Honour Roll

The Honour Roll is in memory of Northern Territory police officers who paid the ultimate price servicing the community.

​

It commemorates all members who died on duty or have died as a result of their duties, including officers before the establishment of the Northern Territory Police Force in 1870.

​

Names are included to the Honour Roll based on the criteria agreed upon by the National Police Memorial Co-ordination Committee.

Mounted Constable 1/C
John Charles Shirley

Died 7 November 1883

Mounted Constable 1/C John Charles Shirley died 7 November 1883, aged 27 years from dehydration while searching for men who had murdered a man at Lawson’s Creek[7].  

Constable Maxwell Clifford Gilbert

Died 17 August 1948

Constable Maxwell Clifford Gilbert Died 17 August 1948, aged 27 years when the vehicle he was driving overturned just north of Wauchope. He was escorting a prisoner toAlice Springs[7]

Inspector Louis Clandon Hook

Died 16 June 1967

Inspector Louis Clandon Hook died from extensive injuries from a rollover near Pine Creek[7]

Detective Sergeant Ian Graham Bradford

Died 29 January 1984

Detective Sergeant Ian Graham Bradford died when the police vehicle he was a passenger in went over the edge of the wharf in Darwin[7]

Senior Constable 1/C Michael Read

Died 5 December 2014

Senior Constable 1/C Michael Read "Mick" suffered a heart attack on 5 December 2014 while undertaking annual defensive tactics re-qualification at the Northern Territory Police College.  He received medical treatment in Darwin and Adelaide but suffered a subsequent Heart Attack which he did not recover from.  

Native Tracker Mungo

Died 2 November 1890

Native Tracker Mungo was fatally shot by an escaped prisoner when on patrol in Anthonys Lagoon NT

Mounted Constable Albert Stewart McColl 

Died 1 August 1933

Mounted Constable Albert Stewart McColl was speared to death at Woodah Island in Arnhem Land[7].

Died 9 June 1952

Constable William Bryan Condon was shot twice after confronting an armed gunman[7]

Sergeant Colin John Eckert 

Died 9 June 1970

Sergeant Colin John Eckert was killed in a head-on collision in Katherine[7].

Brevet Sergeant Glen Anthony Huitson

Died 3 August 1999

Brevet Sergeant Glen Anthony Huitson was killed in a gun battle on the Stuart Highway.  Read More...

Died 1 November 1892

Native Constable Walter was speared in the execution of his duty whilst on patrol in Erldunda NT

Died 10 January 1890

Native Constable Peter was speared in the execution of his duty whilst on patrol at Finke River NT.

Police Legacy

Northern Territory Police Legacy is a self supporting not for profit Incorporated Association which has been operating since 1991.

Northern Territory Police Legacy has a Constitution and is managed and directed by a Board of Management. The Board comprises four representatives nominated by the Northern Territory Police Association, a representative nominated by the Commissioner of Police, a representative nominated by the Minister for Police and a representative nominated by the Retired Police Association of the NT. 

​

The scheme is funded by the donations paid by members of the Northern Territory Police Force and members of the public who kindly donate to help the Northern Territory Police Legacy support our Legatees. 

​

Northern Territory Police Legacy aims to offer personal and/or financial assistance to surviving spouses and dependants of deceased Members who were serving or retired Northern Territory Police Officers. 

​

The scheme assures families that there is an organisation prepared to assist them with their emotional, financial, education and welfare needs. 

​
