Maranboy Police Station is located 70 klm's east of Katherine. Maranboy was originally declared as a Gold mine in 1913. Tin was discovered in the same year by prospectors Scharber and Richardson. Tin mines and a battery were operational in the same year. It was closed for repairs in 1949 and never reopened.

From the account given by the Inspector of Police in his Report to the Administrator in 1917 (which covered the years 1915-16 and 1916-17), the Horseshoe Creek Police Station was moved to Maranboy. The new (but actually second-hand) building was put up to be the Police Station at Maranboy in October 1916 it closed in 1923.

The second Police Station was open from 1923 to 1931. In 1917 a small hospital known as Penola Hostel was established. After its closure in 1931 the building became the third Police Station and Post Office. It is still standing but is very dilapidated and has not been in use since 1982. It is said to be haunted by a little girl. The old Police Cells are still at the station but are not in use. The fourth and current Station was opened in 1982.

Maranboy's patrol area covers 23,000km2 which includes Aboriginal communities and four cattle stations. The communities are:

Beswick

Barunga

Manyallaluk (Eva Valley)

All of the communities are Alcohol restriced zones under the Liquor Act. Permits to drink at home are issued, and police attend alcohol related incidents. Members also attend to general policing duties, motor vehicle registrations and licenses, firearms licensing and regular patrols of the district.

Barunga hold an annual festival each year which is a major event for the community.
