Happy Creek Police Camp

In February, 1889 a new Police Camp opened at Happy Creek. It is situated about 48 kilometers north from the Austral Dwons Homestead and 40 kilometers west from Camooweal. Avon Downs Police station is 33 kilometers away; where it sits today. It was opened chiefly for the purpose of collecting revenue on goods passing at that place, from Queensland into the Northern Territory. It also afforded protection to a portion of the settled country in the southeast part of the Northern Territory.

It was a purpose-built customs house and is now an archaeological ruin. The stonewalled structure stood out across the Southern Barkly Tablelands with an uninterrupted view in every direction.

Avon Downs police houses have remnants of the old stone pavers along the paths to the houses.
