Borroloola is on the Carpentaria Highway. It lies 50km inland from the Western Gulf of Carpentaria Coast on the McArthur River and is about 700km east of Katherine in 'Savannah' country. The police district is about 75,000 square kilometer's. The area has substantial mining and cattle industries as well as commercial and amateur fishing areas.

The local Police station is located at 24 Garawa Street, Borroloola.

It consists of eight sworn members. The Officer in Charge of the station is at the rank of Senior Sergeant.

Their duties include -

General policing

Motor vehicle registry - vehicle registrations/driver's license/vehicle inspections

Traffic duties along the highway and the township

General patrols to mine sites

Community engagement

The Borroloola Township consists of four main communities within the town being Yanyula Camp, Garawa Camp, Mara Camp and the Sub-division.

A small Fire and Emergency Response Group (FERG) exists in Borroloola. The FERG is located in a small shed adjacent to the police station. FERG volunteers are trained in grass firefighting, road crash rescue, first aid, search and rescue and search boat operations. If required some further firefighting assistance can be obtained from the McArthur River mine site.

Historical Borroloola Police Museum

The Historical Borroloola Police Museum still stands and is upkept by the National Trust.

Few examples of early Northern Territory Police Stations exist today. Borroloola thankfully is one of the exceptions. The station still stands in beautiful condition and serves as a focus point for historical collections for the area.

The original police station at Borroloola was built in 1886. It is a Heritage Listed building on the National Estate under the control of the National Trust as the Borroloola Police Station Museum.

It is located in the main township at 1 John Street and is a 'must see' for any visitor to the town.
